Salary: £29,500 - £30,500
Closing Date: 10th November 2025

About Dukes Barn

We are a registered charity based in Beeley, in the heart of the Peak District National Park. We provide inclusive, adventurous outdoor learning experiences for children and young people from a wide range of backgrounds — including those with physical, sensory, learning, or behavioural needs, as well as those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to take part in outdoor education.

Our work is built on the belief that everyone deserves the chance to experience adventure, challenge, and personal growth in a supportive and inspiring environment. Through our charitable programmes, we help schools, families, and community groups access experiences that build confidence, teamwork, and resilience.

Much of our work is made possible through fundraising and community support, which enables us to subsidise visits and extend opportunities to those who would otherwise be unable to attend. Every course, event, and fundraising activity contributes directly to our mission — helping young people learn through adventure and discover what they are truly capable of.

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Outdoor Activity Instructor to join our dedicated team. The successful candidate will deliver a range of adventurous outdoor activities — from climbing, caving, and canoeing to team challenges and environmental education — ensuring every participant feels valued, supported, and empowered.

This is a hands-on role that combines technical skill with empathy and creativity. You will be working closely with children and young people of all abilities, including those with physical, sensory, learning, or behavioural needs. As part of our small and passionate team, you will contribute to the smooth running of the Centre and uphold the highest standards of safety, inclusion, and care.

Key Responsibilities

·       Plan and lead engaging outdoor activity sessions across a wide range of disciplines.

·       Adapt instruction to ensure full inclusion and accessibility for all participants.

·       Provide attentive group supervision, emotional support, and positive behaviour management.

·       Collaborate with teachers, carers, and support professionals to meet individual needs.

·       Uphold AALA and Dukes Barn safety standards, maintaining equipment and accurate records.

·       Support the Activity Manager in planning, logistics, and operational duties.

·       Assist with community events and fundraising activities that support our charitable mission.

·       Aid in the upkeep and maintenance of the Centre.

Essential Criteria

·       AALA-compliant outdoor qualifications, including:

·       Caving: LCMLA Level 1 (minimum)

·       Climbing: Rock Climbing Instructor (RCI) or equivalent

·       Walking: Lowland Leader or higher

·       Watersports: Qualification permitting group management on sheltered water

·       Current Outdoor First Aid qualification

·       Minibus driving entitlement (D1 + E preferred)

·       Proven experience leading outdoor activities for young people

·       Experience working with participants with additional needs

·       Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills

·       Commitment to inclusion, equality, and safeguarding

Desirable

·       Higher-level or additional outdoor qualifications (e.g. ML, LCMLA L2, Level 3 Paddlesport Coach)

·       Experience supporting charity events or community outreach

·       Knowledge of environmental education and sustainability

·       Experience in an outdoor education centre environment

Why Join Us?

At Dukes Barn, you’ll be part of a supportive, purpose-driven team who believe in the power of the outdoors to change lives. Every day offers the chance to make a real difference — helping children and young people overcome challenges, discover their strengths, and experience a lasting sense of achievement.

You’ll work alongside colleagues who share your passion for inclusion, adventure, and growth, combining professional outdoor instruction with compassion, creativity, and care. As you help others reach their potential, you’ll also have the opportunity to develop your own skills and find fulfilment in a career that truly matters.
